How to Prepare Your Roof for Severe Weather and Storm Season

    The Reality of Midwest Storms

In Omaha and the surrounding areas, severe weather is a fact of life. From torrential spring rains and damaging summer hail to heavy winter snow loads, your roof must be ready to withstand extreme conditions. Proper preparation is the key to preventing catastrophic damage and costly emergency repairs.

    1. Schedule a Pre-Season Professional Inspection

The most effective way to prepare for storm season is to have your roof inspected by a licensed professional. A trained roofer can spot minor vulnerabilities—like a loose shingle or a cracked seal—that a severe storm would easily exploit. Fixing these small issues beforehand prevents them from becoming major leaks during a downpour.

    2. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts

Your gutters are designed to safely channel water away from your roof and foundation. If they are clogged with leaves, twigs, and debris, heavy rain will cause water to back up under your roof shingles, leading to severe fascia and soffit rot, as well as interior leaks.

    • Clean gutters at least twice a year (spring and fall).
    • Ensure downspouts direct water at least 5 feet away from your foundation.
    • Consider installing gutter guards to minimize debris buildup.

    3. Trim Overhanging Tree Branches

High winds can easily snap dead or dying tree branches, sending them crashing onto your roof. Even healthy branches that constantly scrape against your shingles can strip away the protective granules over time. Keep all tree branches trimmed at least 6 to 10 feet away from your roofline.

    4. Secure Loose Shingles and Flashing

High winds look for any weak point to grab onto. A single loose shingle can catch the wind, causing a chain reaction that tears a large section of roofing off your home. Ensure all shingles are securely fastened and that metal flashing around chimneys and vents is tightly sealed.

    5. Check Your Attic Ventilation and Insulation

Proper attic ventilation is crucial year-round. In the winter, poor ventilation can lead to the formation of ice dams, which force water back up under your shingles. Ensure your soffit and ridge vents are clear of obstructions and that your attic is adequately insulated to maintain a consistent roof temperature.

    6. Consider Upgrading to Impact-Resistant Shingles

If your roof is older and you live in a hail-prone area, upgrading to Class 4IR (Impact Resistant) shingles or a Stone Coated Steel roof is one of the best investments you can make. These materials are rigorously tested to withstand severe hail impacts, and many insurance companies offer premium discounts for homes equipped with them.

    7. Review Your Homeowner's Insurance Policy

Before storm season hits, review your insurance policy. Understand your deductible, what types of storm damage are covered, and whether you have actual cash value or replacement cost coverage for your roof. Knowing your coverage beforehand reduces stress if you ever need to file a claim.

What to Do After a Storm Hits

If a severe storm does roll through, assess your home safely from the ground. Look for missing shingles, dented gutters, or debris on the roof. Never climb onto a damaged roof. Instead, call a trusted local contractor to perform a post-storm assessment.
